At the opening of the National Cancer Research Institute conference in Glasgow yesterday, a trial about a chemical dye 5ALA that highlights tumour cells during surgery was presented.
Chair of our Scientific and Medical Advisory Board (SMAB), Prof Garth Cruickshank was at the presentation, which provided more evidence on the usefulness of 5ALA in aiding surgeons in their efforts to define and remove as much of a malignant glioma during brain surgery as possible.
He said: "I am delighted that this benefit has been recognised in new NICE guidance and that with the interest stirred by Tessa Jowell's speech in January, as well as the ongoing campaigning work of Brain Tumour Research and other charities, we will see this treatment adopted wholeheartedly across the NHS immediately.“
