A year after the loss of a Bristol rugby legend to a brain tumour, his family, friends and teammates have raised more than £16,000 to fund vital research to help find a cure for the disease that killed him.
Andrew Bridgman was diagnosed with a low-grade oligodendroglioma in 2009, which later became an aggressive glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). During his 11-year battle, Andrew underwent four craniotomies. He sadly passed away on 7th August 2020, aged 39.
In the year since Andrew’s death, there have been a number of events and fundraising challenges which to date have raised thousands for Brain Tumour Research. Andrew’s family took part in Wear A Christmas Hat Day, and his childhood friends Rich Maggs and Dan Massey took on a 4 x 4 x 48 challenge, which raised more than £3,000 in Andrew’s memory.
Dan also recently completed a gruelling 1,000-mile cycle from John O’Groats and Land’s End (JOGLE), along with another of Andrew’s friends, Lisa Knight. Together, they raised more than £5,000.
Lisa said: “It felt great to be doing something positive for others in the future and to have Andy’s name associated with it. We want to see massive advances in treatment, and even a cure as a legacy for our wonderful, sorely-missed friend.”
