Sisters mark a decade without dad with fundraising challenges

Two siblings from Essex are taking on a series of running challenges to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research, to mark the 10th anniversary of losing their father to the disease.

Bethany Lloyd, 22, and Chloe Lloyd, 19, (both seen above left) are each running a 10km race, half marathon and full marathon this year, in the hope of finding a cure for brain tumours. Along with family friend Steve Everitt (below left), their mammoth ‘10K for 10 Years’ adventure began at the start of this month, with the QE Olympic Park 10K.

Then, on 23ʳᵈ February, the sisters will complete the QE London Half, followed by Chloe taking part in the London Landmarks Half on 6ᵗʰ April. Later that same month, Bethany and Steve will race through the capital at the TCS London Marathon.

Bethany and Chloe’s efforts come 10 years after their dad, Steve Lloyd (above centre), died shortly after his 40ᵗʰ birthday of a glioblastoma. Bethany said: “I’m sure Dad would think we’re a bit mad for doing this. It felt right for me and Chloe to do something together to continue raising awareness of brain tumours."

Throughout radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment, Steve inspired more than £30,000 of fundraising for Brain Tumour Research by family and colleagues at Transport for London (TfL), who cycled 74 miles to visit all 61 stations on the District Line. Earlier this month, Steve’s friend Leon from TfL was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in recognition of his fundraising for the cause.

Bethany added: “Growing up, we knew Dad was poorly and wouldn’t be around forever. We made a bucket list of things we wanted to do as a family, from a week-long family sleepover in our living room to incredible holidays abroad. They’re memories I’ll cherish forever.

“Since Dad died, there’s been a whole community of people fundraising in his memory, which shows how loved he was and that really warms my heart. I’d do anything to help another family who are given a brain tumour diagnosis to not have to go through the heartbreak our family experienced.

“As tough, time-consuming and mentally challenging running long distances may be, it must be done to help future patients and their families.”
