Today we remember brain tumour campaigner Liam Bergin on the first anniversary of his death.
Liam was 52 when he passed away from a glioblastoma (GBM) on 26th June 2023, leaving his wife Jen and children, Joe, Caitlin and Esme.
Following his shock diagnosis, Liam raised an incredible £45,000 for Brain Tumour Research through a variety of fundraising initiatives and shared his brain tumour journey on his personal blog.
In March 2022, Liam and Joe visited our Centre of Excellence at Queen Mary University of London where they placed nine tiles on the Wall of Hope, representing the nine days of research sponsored by the family’s fundraising. Touchingly, Liam chose to dedicate his tiles to nine young people who lost their lives to brain tumours.
Since losing Liam, his family has continued to support the charity. Joe recently paid tribute to his bike-loving dad by completing a 250km coast-to-coast fundraising cycle from Whitehaven to Tynemouth with 23 of his friends. Poignantly, Joe and Liam completed the same challenge together in June 2021.
Joe, who has raised more than £5,500 on his JustGiving page, said: “Since Dad died, it’s been a really difficult year, but I want to make the most of what there is. Dad wouldn’t want people moping around being sad, he’d want them to have a good time.
“The ride brought back really nice memories; it was really nice to have that connection again. I thought about Dad a lot and it was emotional, but his spirit got us through it. Everyone wanted to do something positive, so it was good to be able to raise some money for this great cause.”
We’ll be thinking of Jen, Joe, Caitlin and Esme, and all those who knew and loved Liam today.
